Sanitation Department

The City of Millington has twice (2) a week household garbage pick up and twice (2) a week rubbish pick up. You can find out your scheduled day for collection by calling the Public Works office at 901-873-5650.

The sanitation department provides a 95-gallon container for each single-family residence. These containers are constructed of a strong durable material that is rodent and insect proof. Homeowners are asked to place their container at the curb before 7am and to remove it by 7 a.m the next morning. If you do not have a curb, please place the container at the end of your driveway or along side it.

If needed, excess garbage may be placed in plastic bags with ties then placed on top or beside your garbage cart. City crews will not collect garbage scattered from broken/torn plastic bags. Likewise, garbage placed in non-city issued carts (such as: 30-gallon Rubbermaid containers) will not be collected.

In an effort to improve the city's appearance, additional carts are offered for purchase to residents for $50.00 each plus tax. If requested three equal payments of $16.67 plus tax will be added to your water bill to cover the cost.

Please record the serial number(s) of your cart(s) for reference. All carts with city seals are city property assigned to specific addresses. Please do not paint or write on these carts. It is the homeowner's responsibility to replace if stolen or damaged by means other than normal use. Repairs to city owned carts may be scheduled by calling Public Works at (901) 873-5650.

Yard waste: brush and limbs must be placed at the curb before 7:00 a.m. to be picked up on your regular garbage day. This pickup typically runs behind during the peak seasons and after storms. Boxes and other waste material should be placed at the curb. Tires must be kept separate from other yard waste for shredding. Avoid placing any debris in street, around mailboxes, next to utility poles, fire hydrants or over drainage or other such structures. Please do not block the containers or other curb trash on pickup day.

Grass clippings: Please bag your grass clippings and other loose yard waste, place at the curb or in your garbage cart. Leaves may be bagged and placed at the curb for pickup on regular garbage day. During loose-leaf season, leaves may be placed unbagged on the neutral strip (between the curb and sidewalk) or on the road shoulder in a dome shaped pile. Do not place leaves in drainage ditches or the gutter. Be sure to separate loose leaves from other debris (example: tree limbs and trash). Loose-leaf crews make one full collection of the city before beginning another. The time between collections varies depending upon the volume for collection citywide.

Rubbish shall be defined as leaves, brush, and refuse as those terms are generally defined except that dead animals and fowls, body wastes, hot ashes, rocks concrete, bricks and similar material are expressly excluded.

The service charge for collection of refuse from each residential dwelling shall be $18.00 per calendar month. This includes your household and rubbish puck up.

Commercial pick up: the city will furnish commercial establishments the number of dumpsters needed. Where several small generators are located together, a common dumpster may be provided no unauthorized person shall uncover, rifle, pilfer, dig into, turn over, or in any other manner disturb or use any refuse container belonging to another. This section shall not be construed to prohibit the use of public refuse containers for their intended purpose.

Special needs: customers that have special waste or require other than standard refuse collection service should contact the public works director in advance to determine costs and to schedule service. You may contact Public Works at (901) 873-5650.

We have recycle bins at the Public Works Department parking lot for newspaper and plastic. You may bring these items to the recycling bin. It is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • Install low-flow faucet aerators.

  • Take quick showers instead of baths. Generally showers use less water.

  • Install a low-flow showerhead. You will only use only about 2.5 gallons per minute.

  • Repair leaking or dripping faucets.

  • Repair running toilets.

  • Install a "toilet dam" inside the toilet's water-holding tank.
